Het is namelijk uitgegroeid tot het epicentrum van onderzoek naar de meest geavanceerde chiptechnologie\u00ebn, waar Amerikaanse giganten zoals Nvidia of Aziatische spelers (Samsung en andere Chinese actoren) domineren, met de recente inauguratie van de Europese NanoIC-pilotlijn. Totale investering: 2,5 miljard euro.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Het besluit om een dergelijke pilotlijn voor transistors van minder dan twee nanometer te huisvesten dateert van mei 2024. In iets meer dan anderhalf jaar heeft Imec het project gerealiseerd. Het werd onlangs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imec-int.com\/en\/press\/imec-inaugurates-nanoic-pilot-line-accelerating-innovation-sub-2nm-systems-chip\">groots geopend<\/a> in aanwezigheid van Europees commissaris Henna Virkkunen, premier <strong>Bart De Wever<\/strong> en Vlaams minister-president <strong>Matthias Diependaele<\/strong>. Velen van hen kregen voor de gelegenheid gepaste kleding.<\/p>\n<p>Een cleanroom van 2.000 m\u00b2, specifiek voor technologie\u00ebn met chips kleiner dan 2 nanometer, is nu toegankelijk op de Leuvense campus. Bedrijven uit heel Europa kunnen er hun innovaties testen en ontwikkelen. Het voegt zich bij de bestaande 10.000 m\u00b2 aan cleanroomfaciliteiten. Dit alles moet Imec in staat stellen een sleutelrol te spelen in Europa&#8217;s ambitie om wereldwijd een van de leiders te worden in chipinnovatie en -productie.<\/p>\n<p>Hoe meer transistors in een chip, hoe krachtiger hij is. De vraag naar halfgeleiders en ge\u00efntegreerde kracht groeit exponentieel, of het nu gaat om kunstmatige intelligentie, autonome voertuigen, gezondheidszorg of 6G mobiele technologie.<\/p>\n<p>Het project stopt echter niet daar. Met de steun van Europese, Belgische en Vlaamse autoriteiten \u2013 en hun sterk netwerk van industri\u00eble partners \u2013 gaat het instituut binnenkort beginnen met de bouw van een gloednieuwe cleanroom op zijn Leuvense site. Dit zal een extra oppervlakte van 4.000 m\u00b2 vertegenwoordigen en is essentieel om het Europese NanoIC-initiatief op kruissnelheid te brengen.<\/p>\n<p>Over een periode van vijf jaar zal de <strong>NanoIC<\/strong>-pilotlijn worden uitgerust met meer dan honderd geavanceerde apparaten, verdeeld over Imec en de campussen van zijn onderzoekspartners CEA-Leti (Frankrijk), Fraunhofer (Duitsland), VTT (Finland), CSSNT-UPB (Roemeni\u00eb) en Tyndall National Institute (Ierland).<\/p>\n<p>De investering in de Leuvense lijn is aanzienlijk: 2,5 miljard euro. Vlaanderen heeft 750 miljoen euro voor zijn rekening genomen, gevolgd door de Europese Unie (700 miljoen). De private partners, waaronder de Nederlandse producent van machines voor de halfgeleiderindustrie ASML, nemen het grootste deel voor hun rekening, met meer dan een miljard euro.<\/p>\n<p>Deze initiatief valt binnen het kader van de Europese verordening over halfgeleiders, waarvan de hoofddoelstelling is om het aandeel van de Europese Unie in de wereldwijde chipproductie tegen 2030 te verdubbelen tot 20%.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Het Leuvense onderzoekscentrum Imec belichaamt nu het antwoord dat Europa aan de rest van de wereld wil geven op het gebied van technologische soevereiniteit.
